Seeing Eye Dog portrays the life and art of the Icelandic artist, Birgir Andrésson who died much to soon at the age of 53 in the year 2007. With both parents blind Andrésson grew up in an unconventional environment and later explained that he had been the eye of the home. This unusual background inspired his keen interest in the relationship between language and image, presence and absence. Bringing the nature of the artist’s approach into play, the documentary is filled with mesmerizing visual language complimenting the open, playful, yet profound works under consideration. It’s composed of insightful narratives told by Andrésson’s close friends, family and coworkers, the distant voice of the artist himself and a poetic voice over lead by the novelist Kristín Ómarsdóttir. Tracing his first conceptual experiments through his growing interest in Icelandic, national heritage, his acknowledgement of having been raised by blind parents and finally culminating in the clear visual statements found in Birgir Andrésson’s mature work. He is a key figure in Icelandic art history, elaborating on local tradition with the means of international contemporary art.
